Interesting Fee Dispute between Rock Star and his Attorney . . .Here's an interesting read:
King v. Fox, Docket No. 04-0815-cv (2d Cir. August 2, 2005).Edward C. King is a former member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, who played guitar and c0-wrote some of their biggest hits. He left the band in the mid-70s and ended up in a big dispute over his entitlement to royalties. He ended up hiring Fox, a P.I. attorney, to litigate his claims on a contingency fee basis. Fox was successful in securing payment both going back and forward, and asserted that his contingency fee applied to the stream of future royalties. King, after paying Fox for a number of years, eventually protested that he should not have to pay a share to Fox in perpetuity.
The Second Circuit certified questions to the NY Court of Appeals, focused on whether King could have ratified the fee agreement. A long opinion, but a good read.
